Summary

Foundation apprenticeships are introductory courses that help young people get started in an industry. Anyone between 16 and 21 can start a foundation apprenticeship. If you're between 22 and 24, you can start if:

  • have an EHC plan
  • are in care or have been in care
  • are in prison or have been in prison.

Work

As an apprentice, you'll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You'll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you'll do at work

  • Working on-site assisting with the preparation for flooring installation
  • Prepare surfaces (sanding, cleaning, measuring) ready for work
  • Use tools and materials alongside experienced tradespeople
  • Support different projects – from homes to large developments
  • Follow health & safety practices on site
  • Work as part of a team with other trades and site managers
  • Interact with customers and learn professional communication
  • Keep work areas clean and organised
  • Learn new skills daily through hands-on tasks

An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.
