Work

As an apprentice, you'll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You'll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you'll do at work

  • Assemble pipe sections, tubing and fittings, using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, plastic solvent, caulking or soldering, brazing and welding equipment
  • Once pipes and plumbing fittings are installed, fill pipes or plumbing fixtures with water or air and observe pressure gauges to detect and locate leaks
  • Study building plans and inspect structures to assess material and equipment needs, to establish the sequence of pipe installations, and to plan installation around obstructions such as electrical wiring
  • Install sanitary and water piping systems and extend piping to connect fixtures and plumbing to relevant systems
  • Ability to use equipment such as angle grinders and SDS drills

Training

An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.
