Work

As an apprentice, you'll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You'll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you'll do at work

We are looking to employ two Civil Engineering Apprentices as part of our Infrastructure Design Team working towards a Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship BEng (Hons) at the University of Portsmouth.

As an apprentice, you will work alongside other apprentices on the same course and experienced staff gaining valuable hands-on experience whilst studying for a Level 6 qualification in Civil Engineering.  You will spend 1 day a week on day release at University and 4 days in the workplace where you will receive on the job training and ongoing support as part of a friendly and enthusiastic team, keen to get you involved from the day you start.

Your day-to-day work will include:

  • Use of industry standard software such as AutoCAD
  • Developing technical highway and drainage designs to support planning applications and the detailed design stage
  • Assisting with the preparation of technical reports, including Flood Risk Assessments, Sustainable Drainage and Foul Water Technical Notes
  • Undertaking technical assessments for new developments
  • Liaison with third parties and Statutory Undertakers to support projects
  • Helping ensure compliance with relevant industry standards, design guides and regulations
  • Generally supporting the team to deliver projects on time and budget

An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • Maths & English (grade 4-9 (A-C))
  • A Levels to incl Maths, Physics or Statistics (grade 112-120 UCAS points)

  • You will be required to apply to the University of Portsmouth who must confirm your suitability for the apprenticeship course before any final offer of employment is made
