As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Ivel Valley School and College in Biggleswade are an innovative and inclusive school, where the pupils are at the heart of everything they do. Their pupils are educated alongside their peers in classes that are arranged by pupils’ age, not separated by the nature of their special educational needs and disabilities.

YOUR MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES: 

You will receive full training, and you will be working with the site team to gain experience and knowledge in the following areas:

Facilities & Property Management:

  • Ensure the security of the school including, depending on hours worked, helping with the unlocking and locking up of the school
  • Daily gate duty - managing traffic on and off site and loading/unloading pupils from vehicles
  • Provide additional site support as required to the cleaners and provide cover for annual leave and absence of the other site managers/agents, being responsible for contractors whilst on the school site and ensure works are carried out and completed safely and to the required standard
  • (If you have a driving licence) Ad hoc driving of minibuses, e.g. for vehicle servicing, collecting items, filling up with fuel etc. including assisting other school staff as required
  • Monitor, order and take delivery of stores, goods and equipment and arrange their safe storage and distribution as appropriate

Maintenance Services:

  • Ensure key operational systems such as heating, electrics, plumbing, sewage, drainage and lighting are safe and effective, and undertake minor repairs and maintenance in all these areas
  • Undertaking other repairs and maintenance around the site, e.g. fencing, gates, locks, furniture, equipment, ceiling tiles
  • Undertake remedial painting and decorating and basic plaster repair or wall repairs
  • Improving the site and buildings for staff and pupils, e.g. putting up hooks, shelves, pictures or noticeboards, building furniture, moving items around, filling sandpits
  • Contribute to the safety and maintenance of school vehicles
  • General porterage duties include movement of furniture, equipment and deliveries within the school and undertaking emergency or ad hoc cleaning duties/activities, e.g. spillages and maintaining a safe, clean and orderly learning and working environment
  • Ensure that cleaning and maintenance equipment is properly maintained and in good working order
  • Carry out rubbish removal as necessary and ensure bins are kept clean and tidy. And undertake light gardening duties and ensure school buildings, entrance areas and playgrounds are free from rubbish/leaves and there are no broken/overhanging branches that could pose a safety risk

Statutory Checks, Tests & Inspections:

  • To maintain a robust inspection, monitoring and record-keeping system, consistent across the school, relating to compliance with relevant health & safety legislation

General:

  • Ensure that confidentiality is maintained at all times in respect of school-related matters and to prevent disclosure of confidential and sensitive information
  • To undertake any professional duties, reasonably delegated by the Senior Leadership Team and comply with all Ivel Valley School policies
  • Some of the work will be physically demanding (heavy lifting, working at height, use of power tools or heavy equipment). Some of the work may need to be done outside, such as repairs and health and safety checks in wet weather. You will need to be able to drive for this role

Working hours may vary so that the apprentice gets to see all aspects of property maintenance, e.g. unlocking and locking the site, working on jobs that can only be done when pupils are not on site.
